SeeSaw - Digital Portfolios For Any Classroom

Have you heard of Seesaw?!?! Seesaw is an amazing app and web based tool for students, teachers, and families!! This is my first year using Seesaw and I absolutely LOVE IT!! Seesaw empowers students to take ownership of their learning and to reflect on their progress over time. It also gives students tools to show what they know in the way that works best for them! This neat tool inspires students to try their best by providing an audience for their work beyond the classroom. It also creates meaningful home to school connections so families can better support their child's learning.

How do we use it you ask... I started off the school year by using it to send parents important reminders, upload newsletters, and post pictures of our learning! It began as a tool for parent communication and has transformed into so much more! Now my students use it to post on their portfolio! They can share their work by uploading pictures and can add text or a recording to explain to their families what they are learning about and how they completed a project or activity. Students can "show what they know" using photos, videos, drawings, tex, PDFs, and links! You read that right!! Even in my kindergarten classroom, my kids can upload items straight to their journal and it is immediately accessible for me to view and give feedback! You may be wondering how it's so easy... Well, Seesaw has a built in support for a QR code sign in making it simple for my 5 and 6 year old learners to sign in! Students can also use an email address or a Google account to sign in making it a perfect tool for any K-12 classroom!

From a teacher's perspective, Seesaw saves time on organization and parent communication, makes formative assessment easy, and provides a safe place to teach 21st Century skills. I hope you will take the time to give Seesaw a look and explore all the great features this tool has to offer! it is a great app to use with your students and families!

April 13, 2017 News

HELLO EVERYONE!! Take a look at our newsletter for the week! Although it's been a short week at school, we've been super busy! We've had lots of fun learning about coins, spending and saving, weather, fairy tales, fables, sequencing, and CVC words!

Remember that tomorrow is a school holiday and there is no school on Monday as well! I will be out Tuesday for my Resident Day! Mrs. Dreiling will be with the students. We've planned a normal Tuesday for them so all should go very smoothly while I'm gone! I'll be back with the class on Wednesday!

Kindergarten Cap and Gown pictures are on Thursday, April 20th. Please fill out the form and send it to school next week (by the 20th). There is no payment due on the 20th. LifeTouch will send proofs to all the students that are present that day. There will be no picture make-up day.

We do not have a Kindergarten Graduation. We have KINDERGARTEN CIRCUS instead!! Starting May 5th, we will practice for the big show! Circus will be on May 11th at 9:00 AM in the CES cafeteria. Please plan on attending! It is always such a cute performance. Following the Circus, we will have our Family Picnic. You can bring a lunch for you and your child! The picnic will be outside (weather permitting).

Well I think that's all the reminders for now! If you have any questions please contact me!

I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend and wish you all a very HAPPY EASTER!

April 7, 2017 News

Hi families!! We've had an awesome week at school! Take a look at our newsletter for the week.

Cap and Gown picture information will go home next week. From what I understand, LifeTouch will not be sending order forms for you to fill out in advance. They will come take Kindergarten Cap and Gown pictures on April 20th and then send proofs for every child that took pictures. Proofs usually arrive at school about 2 weeks after pictures are taken. With that said, they do not come back another day for retakes, so please make sure your child is here on this day! They always turn out so cute! I can't believe it's already time for them to do this! The school year has flown by!

We go to the Children's Museum next week (on Tuesday)! This a short field trip so your child will not need a sack lunch. We will leave around 12:00 and be back by 2:30! Just in time for snack! :)

The next two weeks are short weeks. We do not have school on Friday, April 14th or on Monday, April 17th. The 14th is a holiday and the 17th is a "Bad Weather Day". I am taking my Resident Day, a day given to me by TAMU-C for being a mentor teacher, on April 18th. Mrs. Dreiling will be with the children on this day. They will have a normal day planned. She's been with us since the fall so I am sure they will have a great day with her! If you have any questions about this please let me know!

**Just a note: I'll be at the City Park tomorrow for the Aglaia Easter Egg Hunt! We put this fun event on every year! Children in 2nd grade and below can come enjoy a fun hunt and prizes! The hunt starts at 11:00! Please come if you can! I would love to see all my friends there!**

Well that's all for now! I hope everyone has a great weekend! See you on Monday!

Creating with Puppet EDU

Hey all!! I'm excited to share all about the new app we used in class last week! My kindergarten kiddos loved using Puppet EDU to make their own slideshow! Puppet EDU allows students to easily create videos in the classroom! Students as young as FIVE can make videos to tell stories, explain ideas, or document their learning! I remember learning about this app last year at TCEA and then again this year! It was time for my little scholars to use a different app to show their learning!

So let me tell you how we used this awesome app!

First, we went on a shape hunt to take pictures of 2-D and 3-D shapes around the school. My students are very familiar with using the camera on the iPads so this did not take us long. With the help of my student teacher, I took a small group of 4-5 students out of the classroom for about 15 minutes so we were finished taking pictures in one day.

The next day, I showed the students Puppet EDU and let them do some exploring in the app. We learned how to select pictures for the slideshow, add music, and annotate over the slides. There is also an adding text feature. We did not use this function for this project, but I plan to use it for future activities!

Once the children explored and were comfortable with the app (which doesn't take long for these 5 and 6 year olds) I had them each create their own 2-D/ 3-D shapes slideshow using the pictures they took the previous day! My goal was for them to name each shape as they went through their pictures. I did not require them to tell me if it was 2-D or 3-D and I did not have them specify the number of angles/corners. For this project we focused solely on shape identification.

Their finished products were great especially for our first time utilizing this app! Here are two slideshow examples:

I hope that you enjoyed hearing about how my students used this app to create their very own shape slideshow! I believe this is an app that can be easily and effectively used by students of all grade levels and would love to hear how you decide to use it with the children in your classroom!

We have so many things to look forward to this Spring! I will have parent conferences in a few weeks to discuss your child's progress over this school year and address any questions or concerns you may have. Well I think that's all for now! I hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend!

How is Spring Break already here?!?! Seriously where has the school year gone? My goodness it's flying by and I feel like May will be here before we know it! TIME SLOW DOWN!

Here is our newsletter for the week! I sent home folders with most of their work and a copy of this yesterday, I will keep their folder over Spring Break. :)

Just a few notes:

Our resident student teacher from the university, Mrs. Dreiling, will start back to school with us on March 21st! She will be teaching several lessons to the students each week! These are lessons that I have prepared or ones that we have worked on together. My goal is to prepare my students teachers as much as possible for their first real teaching job! Your child will most likely come home talking about Mrs. Dreiling and what they are working on with her! As she is instructing them I will still be in the room guiding her and giving her feedback as needed! I am so grateful to be a mentor teacher for TX A&M Commerce! If you have any questions about this program or what our student teacher will be teaching please let me know!

Thank you to everyone that came to Open House on Tuesday! We had a wonderful turn out and enjoyed showing you all of our projects and activities we've been doing at school! If you were unable to make it, I sent home some of your child's activities on Wednesday. I will keep everything else up in the classroom and hallways for a few more weeks!

On March 22 we will have our Spring and Group Pictures! We have not received order forms for this yet, but I will send home as soon as we do!

I think that's all the notes for now! I hope each of you have a wonderful Spring Break! I  can't wait to hear the stories about what my students did during the break!
